American tries British fish and chips from North and South – and there's clear winner

An American woman has delivered her verdict after sampling British fish and chipsfor the first time. Sarah, who hails from Orange County, California, is currently documenting "eating her way through the UK" on social media.

In her latest TikTok video, she travelled to Bournemouth, Dorset to test the UK's most famous dish in order to see how it compares to restaurants back home. Sarah revealed she travelled for five hours to the south coast city, before heading straight to Harry Ramsden's to snap up a large cod and regular chips, as well as a gravy, a curry sauce and mushy peas.

Apologising for forgetting to pick up a knife and fork, Sarah took a seat a stone's throw from the sea and tucked into the battered fish.

"That's incredible," she gushed, before questioning whether Brits dip their fish into the condiments as well as their chips.

Regardless, Sarah proceeded to try her cod with all three, describing the taste of the gravy as "unique". As for fish dipped in curry sauce, she continued: "I've never heard of fish and chips with curry sauce, but I'm going to try it anyway."

The verdict? "You know what? I actually like the curry better," she declared.

Moving on to the chips, Sarah took one bite and praised: "That's much better than the ones at the Chinese [from a previous video]. This tastes nothing like California fish and chips."

She concluded: "It's fantastic. I'm giving Harry Ramsden a 10 out of 10. This is phenomenal."

Writing in response, one Brit pointed out: "Harry Ramsden's is a chain though, it’s even better from an independent chippy." To which Sarah replied: "I’ll have to keep my eyes peeled for one next time! This one was just convenient with it being on the seafront."

Others meanwhile, instructed Sarah to travel further north - particularly the West Midlands - for a greater fish and chips experience. One of those said: "I will say it and say it again, you can’t beat a chippy from the West Midlands.

"So in the West Midlands we are known for orange chips, if you Google it you will find the best chippys, I recommend them highly, the flavour, texture and experience is on another level."

Instead, however, Sarah travelled to Whitby in North Yorkshire where this time she opted for haddock over cod.

"I've also got tartar sauce this time as that was the next suggestion," she said in a follow-up video, also revealing she'd been told to sample pickled onions and gherkins too.

"Amazing," Sarah said of the gherkin. As for the pickled onion? Her displeased face said it all." She washed it down with dandelion and burdock, meanwhile, which she compared to sparkling grape juice.

Sarah closed with her north vs south verdict: "This is going to be controversial, but I feel like cod is more posh than haddock because haddock has the skin on it - and I feel like when you take the skin off... it's just more posh!

"But I will say... haddock wins. Whitby wins. The north wins!"
